Temi di ricerca
Dario Donno, Master graduated in Chemistry, PhD in Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences, Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the Department of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences, University of Turin in "Natural Compound Chemistry", "Analytical Chemistry and Chromatography", "Arboriculture", "Phytotherapy and Phytochemistry", "Food Science and Technology", "Food Chemistry", "Medicinal Plants and Biodiversity", "Agricultural Science and Genetics". His researches mainly focus on qualitative analysis and analytical strategies (e.g. chromatographic and spectrophotometric analysis coupled to multivariate statistical analysis) for identification and quantification of bioactive compounds in different plant materials (buds, leaves, fruits, bark) and agri-food industry derived-products for their quality and traceability evaluation. Author of more than 150 scientific and technical publications on national and international journals and books, including about 70 in Web of Science and Scopus peer-review journals, he has actively participated in national and EU research projects.
Main projects
Period: 2011 - present
Tree species bud-preparation quality control and standardization: genetic, agronomic and environmental factors: the research aims at identifying the main bioactive compounds (botanicals) in laboratory and commercial bud-preparations (natural food supplements/natural medicines/herbal preparations) used in modern phytotherapy and at evaluating their concentration (analytical fingerprint) by HPLC-DAD and chemometrics. Buds were collected from different tree species and cultivars in different phenological stages and in different sampling sites, testing the agronomic, environmental and genetic influence on the extract chemical composition.
Period: 2013 - present
Nutraceuticals in alternative and underutilized fruits as functional food ingredients: ancient species for new health needs: the research aims at evaluating the potential of alternative and underutilized tree-species fruits as a functional foods by characterization and quantification of the main phytochemicals, selected as health-promoting biomarkers, by HPLC fingerprint. Furthermore, the characterisation of fruit physicochemical traits and antioxidant capacity is performed.
Period: 2015 - present
Food safety and innovative systems of university education (e-learning): analytical-chromatographic (HPLC) techniques for the identification and quantification of bioactive compounds in medicinal plants of subtropical climate zones (Madagascar, Comoros and other ACP countries): the research project aims to identify and quantify the main bioactive compounds (biomarkers) present in different plant parts in medicinal tree-species of subtropical climate zones (Madagascar) by the main chromatographic techniques used in the food and pharmaceutical - herbal (HPLC-DAD/MS) sectors. Quality control of the plant material is an important step to ensure high quality and safety in the final products and in the total supply chain: in this project, innovative communication and education systems (e-learning) will be used to disseminate and discuss the main analytical methods used to ensure high standards of food safety.
Period: 2017 - present
Fingerprinting analytical techniques for quality and traceability evaluation of berries and minor fruits as plant materials for agro-industry: berries and minor fruits represent a raw material more and more used by agro-industry as a source of bioactive compounds; it's becoming ever more necessary, therefore, to assess quality and phytochemical composition in order to guarantee the traceability of agrifood products. In this research chromatographic and spectrophotometric analysis are carried out in order to identify and quantify the main nutraceutical compounds (chemical fingerprint) in plant materials and derived agri-food products. The aim of the fingerprinting is to characterize plant materials by the definition of a specific phytochemical composition profile for each considered fruit species in order to highlight distinctive compositional traits among different agrifood products and define an effective traceability tool.
Other activities
- projects drafting;
- DNA-extraction and spectrophotometric quantification from leaf tissue, PCR analysis and sequencing;
- soil and water testing;
- post harvest quality analysis of berries and plums;
- teaching and training for researchers, students, undergraduates and trainees about nutraceutical and qualitative analyses and use of laboratory equipments;
- supervision of students working on their dissertation projects for bachelor and master's degrees in Agriculture.
